I predict a (quiet) riot

I have a proposition regarding the activism project:

We all know that York clearly has the well-being of its students as its top priority. This is evident in several ways: through the healthy food options it provides (like the Student Centre), the abundance of comfortable seating (like back-less wooden benches and a wide assortment of floors), areas specifically designed to encourage discussion, debate and other scholarly stuffs (like York Lanes), etc.

Sarcasm aside..

In one of my courses last year, we spent the majority of our class time assessing York's treatment of its students and, more importantly, if there was any way we could take matters into our own hands and improve things for ourselves (without getting expelled, someone pressing charges, etc.).

So, we decided on a sit-in-- literally. What if a bunch of people got some furniture together-- some old couches, maybe a lamp or two-- and set it up in Vari Hall? It could create a space where:

a) people wouldn't have to sit on either the floor or uncomfortable (and probably un-ergonomical) benches;
b) discussion could be encouraged rather than frowned upon;
c) you could meet fellow York students! Sober!

It's perhaps not the most politically engaging form of protest, I realize, but it's not entirely impossible either, I don't think.

What do you think?

I'm just curious. Could leaving couches there be considered littering?

I hadn't thought that far ahead.. ideally, we'd take back our furniture and donate it in the most earth-friendly way possible.

But would that not defeat the purpose? How long does an item need to sit before it becomes litter? I suppose it would need to be left there long enough to be used, but for a short enough period not to be litter? Also, as we 'take back our furniture', I bet we find that people have wiped boogers on it.
